looking back on 2019...

... and forward to 2020!

We're entering a new decade! Which feels so weird and cool to say at the same time. I don't remember entering the last decade in 2010, but I do remember entering 2019 with a sigh of relief 2018 had come to an end. I did value that year and everything I'd learned from the experiences I had. But it felt like the end of a stressful year and that was just what I needed.

2019 went very differently for me. I felt like I could take control of my life and change things for the better. This year I loved studying, the road ahead school-wise. And I watched a loooott of movies. Of course there is always the fear of 'getting a job' or the question 'what I will be able to do after I graduate', but I like what I'm doing now. I'll see what opportunities come on my path in two years.

I got a taste of what love might feel like. And it unfortunately disappeared quickly, by forces I couldn't control.

I made the trip of a lifetime. Went to Malaysia with my family and good friends of ours, which I look back on with so much joy and wonder filled memories. Even now I get reminded of the things we did and saw and get a big smile on my face.

I turned twenty years old and was surprised by my friends, whom I now see even more than last year. (Which I looove & brings so much more laughter in my life)

I got a new job at a theatre at the end of this year. It's still all so new, but I'm so glad I made that step. I also (finally) got my driver's license after taking the exam 4 times. And it feels like such a relief.

For 2020 I wish lots more trips and wonderful moments. With or without my family. Since I will be studying abroad next school year, being away from my family will happen more often. I hope I'll be able to find peace with that and grow in the ability to take care of myself. I hope I'll be able to be at peace with the doubts and fears I sometimes feel when people expect something from me. And I expect too much of myself. I hope I fail and make mistakes. That will be my resolution for 2020: make mistakes. Lots of 'em. Learn to fix the problems, but also know that it is okay when something feels uncomfortable. Not everything has to be perfect. Really.

And most of all: I wish you all a lovely last evening of 2019. And to see lots of you in 2020!

christmas gift guide

The most festive, coziest, food-and-family filled holiday is almost upon us! And whilst there is a Christmas playlist melody playing I am typing up this blogpost. For a lot of people Christmas is the equivalent of gift-giving to the ones we hold most dear. In my family we don't celebrate Christmas with presents, but in Holland we have a tradition at the beginning of December called Sinterklaas. That's when we give presents to each other (& the littles get presents from Sinterklaas), so Christmas is basically about food & fam. But!! That doesn't mean that I don't need ideas for presents...

my blog is 4 years old!

Ahhh I still remember that sweet winters day in 2015 when I started my blog... How time flies (when you're having fun but also some hard times)!

I remember doubting every step I took at the beginning of this adventure. And look at us now! So much has happened. And even in these busy weeks (especially this one, school deadlines...) I wanted to dedicate a post to this amazing anniversary. Partly because I never ever would have thought I'd still be doing this now, but I love it.

I feel like I was kind of original at the beginning of this journey. I came up with new ideas to post and things to write about. I've kind of lost that over the years due to lack of time or energy. But now I feel like I'm slowly regaining my voice and just filling my blog with my interests. In the upcoming year I'd like to do this even more. I already have some ideas to incorporate my art in my blog and the exchange abroad which I'm going to make at the beginning of September next year will be another highlight that I can't wait to share.

And for anyone who reads this: Thank you for your support, kind words and the fact that you're reading this. It means more to me than you know. I hope you have a lovely sunday & will stick with me for another year <3

turning twenty

11 11 2019

today i became twenty years old. twenty years on this globe. the past couple of months people have asked me, and i have asked myself, how does that feel? almost being twenty? being twenty now, on this day? 

to be honest, at first i dreaded it. twenty years is a lot. i thought i had to say goodbye to my teenage years. the years that held most of my memories. but then i was reminded that it wasn’t a goodbye. it was a see you again. see you when i’m reminded, or whenever i need those lessons and memories.

i am very grateful of what the years from my tenth birthday up till now have brought me. i feel like they are the years where i discovered who i was. or helped me change to who i wanted to be, or was meant to be. i’m happy with all the lessons it gave me, all the questions and all the answers. some of which i have yet to discover. 

something also changed in the feeling about 'facing my twenties'. i felt, and feel, a sense of peace. of calmness. entering my twenties today feels like a new ten years have been added to my future, in which i can make mistakes, learn, grow. being twenty has made me look back, but also look forward in the sense that i will be able to do so much. to build upon the things i’ve done and gain new experiences or revisit old ones. it's scary, but exciting.

it’s nice being twenty. to be able to look back. like today, i’m taking a journey by train to university, not even a bit afraid of all the things that could go wrong. this seems like a small thing, but it’s something i wouldn’t have imagined to do a few years ago. 

but it's also nice to look forward to what the future may bring. to dream without expectations and be excited about all the love and friendship and little moments that will be there. 

i hope on this day, the eleventh of the eleventh, wherever you are, you have a nice day filled with lots of little moments. the moments that matter. and that you don’t dread what’s in your future or past, but live and love the now.

my favourite spots in rotterdam

i have lived near rotterdam my whole life. on my blog this doesn't show that often, whilst the big city has a lot of great things to offer. lots of cute shops and cafes are located in the city that i know oh so well (and i must admit that i still have lots to discover!) & i want to fill this post with a few of my favorites.

KEET - oppert 2a
this concept store on the corner of oppert is filled with the best presents and other bits and pieces. it is a great place to stop by and buy a treat for your room/home or some ear- and wristcandy. they also have a cafe where you can take a little break from shopping. i've never eaten there before but it's certainly on my to do list!

ten to three bakery - aert van nesstraat 24
if you're looking for a different spot to have an afternoon break (and maybe it happens to be ten to three o'clock) this bakery is the place to be. it might be a bit hard to find at first, but when you step inside the bakery you'll be transported down the rabbit hole in a very alice in wonderland-esque decor. i would highly recommend tasting the cupcakes or drinking a cup of tea with scones whilst you're there! (they also have a spot in the foodhallen now!)

on to clothing shops! we are labels is a shop which sells a lot of different brands. and not the average brands. they have a nice collection, mostly color sorted. i bought a blouse here myself from la petite étoile and i love it so much! if you're looking for something a bit different from the main shops, this is the place to be!

vintage galore! this shop sells vintage-style clothing, own brand and others. i love to go in there for inspiration and really have been longing to buy something, a nice 50's dress maybe... really recommend if you're into barets, swing dresses & all other things vintage.

unc wardrobe - oude binnenweg 42
this is another shop i recently discovered. they have a pop up store and a normal store in rotterdam and they sell really nice clothes and jewelry. the shop is similar to we are labels but their collection has a bit more of a girly touch.

this store is maybe a bit out of the usual route, but still quite close to the markthal! this is my go to shop if i need art supplies. well, need... it's packed with markers, paint, brushes and sketchbooks. it's also just a very nice art shop to look around and daydream about all the things you could create!

moments of bliss

lately i've been a little out of touch. with myself. with the people around me. with life. i've been so focused on school and work and the stress that it was giving me. it was all just building up inside me like a storm. until i read one of daisybutter's petite joys and saw this post on louvette. it made me realize i'd gone too long without noticing the little things. stopping to smell the roses and feel the sunshine on my face. with the upcoming season, autumn, nature gives me so much joy. and i'm happy i caught myself in time to realize it's time to be a little more mindful & attentional to the world around me.

Let's talk about books!! On goodreads I set myself a challenge: read 19 books in 2019. That's never going to happen in the last 4 months, because so far I've only read 8 books. The goal a way to stimulate myself to read more often, so I'll just try to get as far as possible. This summer I read three books - three really different books - that I wanted to give a little review on!

Hi everyone!

Just a quick little announcement... I've decided to start posting in English! It was time for a little change. Just something to make me fall in love with blogging even more. I love the English language and think it will be a great way to practice writing. If you want to translate my posts to another language, you can find the translate button in the bar on the right! Other than that not much will change here... I hope I can provide more content of the things I love and share them with you. Blogging is one of my favourite hobbies and I'd kind of forgotten that the past few months. But if you see me writing in Dutch again in a couple of weeks ignore this post! Then this experiment might have failed...

redang & melaka // the malaysia diaries pt. 4

Redang leek wel een droom. We stapten van de ene boot naar de ander, met het klotsende blauwe water onder mijn voeten. De kleur van het water. Ongelofelijk mooi. En zo helder! Zo had ik het nog nooit gezien. Toen we weggingen was ik nog steeds niet gewend aan de kleur. Met een andere boot werden we afgezet op het strand. Onze voeten raakten het witte zand aan en ik werd niet alleen verblind door de weerkaatsing van de zon, maar door de schoonheid van het eiland. Ik moest mezelf even knijpen. Ja, dit was echt.

Vanuit de Cameron Highlands ging onze reis per auto verder. We reden naar het eiland ten westen van Maleisië: Penang. Hier verbleven we in de stad Georgetown. Het eiland is bereikbaar door middel van een lange brug waar we met de auto overheen reden. We gingen er zelfs twee keer overheen door een verkeerde route... Maar uiteindelijk kwamen we aan bij ons hotel 'Noordin Mews'. Ze waren er super gastvrij. Het hotel had een prachtige inrichting en een zwembad. In de kamers stonden zelfs spulletjes die vroeger in dit oude warenhuis te koop waren. We namen natuurlijk meteen een duik in het water.

Taman Negara ligt in het midden van de jungle van Maleisië. Na Kuala Lumpur reisden we hierheen, eerst met een busje en vervolgens moesten we met een boot. Deze bracht ons naar het resort waar we een paar daagjes zouden blijven. De boot was heel smal en ik had niet gedacht dat al onze bagage er op zou passen, maar het is wel gelukt! Ook werden we gewaarschuwd dat we eventueel uit de boot moesten stappen bij ondiepe wateren, maar dit is heel de reis niet gebeurd. Ik genoot van het briesje en het uitzicht over het water. Ook zagen we aapjes, blauwe vogels en vaarden we heel dicht langs een kudde waterbuffels.

Al heel het jaar keek ik uit naar deze reis. Samen met mijn familie en een ander gezin waarmee we bevriend zijn gingen we naar Maleisië! Mijn ouders wilden ons altijd al eens Azië laten zien. In 3 weken reisden we van plek naar plek en hebben heel veel gezien van het land. Nu ben ik vooral nog aan het nagenieten van de foto's, want ik kan niet geloven dat we alweer thuis zijn. 

We vlogen vanaf Schiphol naar Guangzhou. Vanaf Guangzhou stapten we over en gingen we naar onze eerste bestemming in Maleisie: Kuala Lumpur. Toen we landden en ik de palmbomen in de verte zag staan voelde het alsof de reis echt was begonnen.

Hoe we zijn veranderd. Maar toch hetzelfde zijn gebleven. Gegroeid en niet gekrompen. Maar rijker van ervaringen. De zon deed ons goed. Het licht in onze glimlach. De grote en kleine momentjes die we met elkaar deelden. Een deel van onze vriendschap. Die ik zo koester.

Eigenlijk is alles wat je nodig hebt voor een goede picknick goed gezelschap.

Een groot kleed. Aardbeien. Zelfgebakken brownies en koekjes. Muziek. Ice Tea. 

Een heerlijke ongedwongen middag waarin we praatten over van alles en nog wat. De tijd leek niet te bestaan in ons wereldje. Na onze buikjes te hebben gevuld met alle lekkernijen maakten we nog een wandeling door het park.

juni | weeklog 1

Morgen en overmorgen heb ik tentamens die het laatste blok van het jaar afsluiten, dus ik heb veel gestudeerd de afgelopen week. Tijdens het leren krijg ik altijd zin in om van alles te doen behalve leren. Ik wilde iets plaatsen op mijn blog dat niet te veel tijd in beslag nam, zodat ik me ook kon concentreren op de tentamens. En dus dacht ik dat het misschien leuk was om een web log te maken van mijn week. Een digitale journal, wat ook eigenlijk behoort tot de definitie van bloggen, maar waar ik me gek genoeg nog nooit echt aan heb gewaagd (behalve als ik ergens heen ging op vakantie). Misschien heel voor de hand liggend, maar het idee daalde dus echt pas de afgelopen week op me neer. Ik weet nog niet hoe ik het precies ga aanpakken en of het nog vaker terug zal komen, maar ik vond het in ieder geval erg leuk om te schrijven!

Scones zijn een van mijn favoriete gebakjes uit Engeland. Een hap met clotted cream en jam en ik ben weer even terug in een schattig Engels bakkerijtje met een stomende kop donkere thee op tafel. Natuurlijk kan ik de echte Engelse scones niet overtreffen of zelfs helemaal namaken, daar moet ik toch echt even de zee voor over, maar ik kan het wel proberen. Het recept voor de scones in deze post  heb ik uitgeprobeerd voor Pasen, toen we een heerlijke paasbrunch hadden. En ik dacht laat ik hem ook een plekje op mijn blog geven voor het geval er meer scones-liefhebbers zijn!

back to austria pt. 2

Toen de tweede week aanbrak reden we met de auto naar het zuiden van Oostenrijk, vlakbij de grens met Italië. Tussen prachtige bergen brachten we de rest van de vakantie door. Het was er een stuk kouder dan in Wenen, maar het uitzicht was adembenemend. En ik kreeg er Sound of Music vibes van. Het plaatsje waar we verbleven heette Kötschach-Mauthen. We hebben veel van de plaatsjes die eromheen liggen bezocht en er vaak heerlijk ijs gegeten. Daarnaast hebben we in totaal vier wandelingen gemaakt door de bergen en gefietst langs het water. Na een van de wandelingen namen we de rodelbaan naar beneden, wat echt geweldig was om te doen. De afdaling met de rodelbaan ging best snel en het uitzicht zo ongelofelijk mooi. Ik wist niet dat ik zo kon genieten van de natuur en in Oostenrijk was dat echt niet moeilijk.

In de zomervakantie (2018), het is alweer een tijdje geleden, ging ik met mijn familie naar Oostenrijk. Het was de eerste keer dat ik vakantie vierde in dit land. Ik wist niet zo goed wat er te wachten stond, maar wel dat ik er heel veel zin in had. Toen ik laatst door de mappen op mijn computer bladerde vond ik de foto's van deze vakantie terug en wil ze toch nog een plekje geven op mijn stukje internet. Gewoon. Omdat het kan. Weer even zomervakantie. Weer even back to Austria!

wat ik de afgelopen maanden heb uitgespookt

Een tijdje geleden postte ik het artikel 'studeren in utrecht' om te vertellen hoe het proces van een vervolgstudie kiezen bij mij verliep. Sinds dat artikel heb ik eigenlijk niet meer laten weten hoe het verder is gegaan en hoe mijn leven er nu uit ziet, zeg maar (dat klinkt heel dramatisch maar goed). Zelf ben ik altijd erg geïnteresseerd in wat anderen doen en denken en hoe het leven van mijn leeftijdsgenoten eruit ziet. Het is altijd erg leuk om te lezen, maar ik merk dat ik dat zelf niet echt deel. Ik vond het dus wel tijd om over het leven te praten en jullie een soort life-update te geven, want mijn blog mist in mijn mening vaak wat meer persoonlijke woorden en wat persoonlijk geklets.
